The dates for courses I will be instructing in the Textile Design Program at St. Lawrence College, Kingston Campus, this term are listed below. Our program has been a steady and welcoming source of textile exploration and community building for students and friends with an interest in the fibre arts since 1996.
We welcome you to join in on the fun as we plan for artful workshops, weekends of good play with friends and some exciting design and textile focused study as you plan your future pathway in the textile world as you participate in our courses at St. Lawrence College in 2014:

DESIGN FOR TEXTILES
Tuesday evenings, January 14-April 8th 6-9 pm (credit course)
Design for Textiles focuses on the development of multiple, original fibre and mixed media pieces using fabric, paint, experimental design embellishment and stitch. The goal for each student will be to develop basic design knowledge and practical experience through the use of the elements of design including line, shape, form, texture and dimension. Each week will focus on a specific technique, including but not limited to, hand embroidery, layered collage, piecing, and modern textile assembly. Students will learn a variety of methods to create a body of work based on a chosen theme, and will put these methods into practice each week.
The art work can be in any medium, but use of fibre and mixed media will be encouraged. Students will go home with an abundance of ideas for development of their continued works of art.
Bring to first class: Notebook, pencil, ruler, eraser. Samples of their work in quilting, embroidery, fibre art or mixed media for show and share. NOTE: A program binder will be provided to each student by the Instructor on the first night of class.
$30 fee payable to the Instructor.

TEXTILE ART to BUSINESS
Thursday evenings, January 16 - April 3rd, 6-9 pm (credit course)
Note: this course is listed as CRAFT TO BUSINESS
Students will explore the skills and knowledge required to become successful entrepreneurs. With a view to developing a preliminary outline for a business plan by course end, students focus on a number of key elements in the process including identifying the personal characteristics of the entrepreneur, learning to recognize areas of opportunity, gathering market information, exploring funding alternatives and understanding the need to develop a basic operating budget. Basic marketing concepts are also included.
Bring to first class: Notebook, pen, business cards, portfolio laptop or tablet (if possible) for resource exploration.

INNOVATION STUDIO I - Collage and the Monoprint
Wednesday evenings, Jan. 15- Feb. 5th
( interest only course - four weeks)
In this course, you will discover a whole new world of artistic possibility when you combine collage layering and monoprinting (the art of lifting original design using a gel plate) paint techniques! Layer your personal color palettes, patterns, and images to create richly textured works of art on paper and fabric. We will use two of the most versatile types of printing plates – gel plates and scratch foam – and ink them up with ordinary acrylic paints to create extraordinary art! The result will be a beautiful collection of fabrics and papers to use in your art quilt projects. Beginners are most welcome.
Bring to first class: White or cream cotton fabrics (several 8 x 10 " pieces), foam paint brushes, paper towels, container to take wet fabrics home in. Note book and pencil for notes.

INNOVATION STUDIO II - Find Your Creative Edge
Sat/Sunday. April 5th and 6th
As you learn a multitude of creative techniques for combining paint and collage, your focus will be on the back-and-forth play of spontaneity and intention that characterizes the creative process. Learn to trust your inner art “voice” while exploring color and composition; free your artistic skills by facing your inner critic; and find your creative edge by pushing the boundaries of your comfort zone. These two days of creative collage with a variety of playful objects and painting will offer: a greater confidence in your expressive capabilities; new skills and techniques for creating art that is your own; the courage to break through creative blocks; and a set of practices for keeping your creative skills honed. While experienced artists will benefit from this workshop, beginners are very welcome. The techniques involved are accessible, and everyone can work at their own level.
Bring to first class: 1 metre of white cotton fabric; twelve sheets of white computer paper; a few paint brushes and foam brushes; paper towels for cleanup; camera; and notebook and pencil.

Instructor Biography:
Bethany Garner is a working Textile Artist and long term Instructor in the Textile Design Program at St. Lawrence College. With over 20 years of experience in the painting, dyeing and direct application of fabric embellishment/stitch, Bethany will guide the students to a new and confident start on their own studio based work to create contemporary textiles with an original and focused Fibre Art Foundation.
